Japanese motorcycle manufacturer Yamaha Motors has announced that they are on the making of a motorcycle that will be the world cheapest when launched. The new motorcycle that has not been named yet will be launched at a price tag below Rs 30,000.
Yamaha is developing the motorcycle for emerging markets such as India and Africa where demand for low-cost motorbikes are huge. Currently, Hero Motocorp's CD Dawn sells at the lowest price in the Indian market at Rs 36,000.
Yamaha Motors India CEO & MD Hiroyuki Suzuki said: "Our product benchmark right now (on cost) is the YBR 110 and Crux, but we would like to develop a bike in the low-cost segment for markets like Africa. The target is to make a bike that will cost $500 (about Rs. 27,500). I think such a bike will have a lot of demand in Africa as well as in India."
Meanwhile, Hero Motorcorp and Honda India have also announced their plans of launching cheaper motorcycles in India. Honda had recently launched their cheapest motorcycle – Dream Yuga recently.
Currently, Yamaha sells the Crux 110cc as the entry level motorcycle in India. Yamaha has also said that they would manufacture and export the new sub Rs 30k motorcycle in India. It would be interesting to watch the competition at the fastest growing two-wheeler market with the arrival of many more cheaper bikes. Let's see if Hero Motocorp could retain its number one position in the market with arrival of these bikes
