Renowned Malayalam stage and film actor Thilakan died at a private hospital here following a cardiac arrest in the wee hours of Monday. He was 77. He is survived by two sons and two daughters.
Thilakan had been battling for life at the hospital where he was admitted on August 23 after he had suffered two heart attacks. He had been on and off ventilator since then and had an attack of pneumonia. The end came at 3.35 am Monday morning.
Career of 50 years
Thilakan has acted in more than 200 Malayalam films in his career that spanned over 50 years. Thilakan, who began his acting career in his intermediate days, had been associated with several drama troupes in his early days including the pro-Left Kerala Peoples' Arts Centre (KPAC).
He entered the filmdom in 1979 with a minor role in K.G. George's Ulkadal. He had also won several national and state awards.
Perumthachan, Yavanika, Kireedam, Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu, Moonnampakkam, Kilukkam and Indian Rupee are some of the notable films he acted in.
Many awards in his kitty
Known for his excellence in character roles, Thilakan was awarded the National Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Hrithubhedam in the year 1988. He also earned a Special Jury Award for his performance in Ekantham in 2007.
In 1990, he won the Kerala state's Best Actor award for Perumthachan. Though his name emerged as a strong contender for the National Award that year, the award did not come his way. Again n 1994, He won the state Best Actor award for his movies Gamanam and Santhanagopalam.
Known for brilliant character roles
Ustad Hotel, which was directed by Anwar Rasheed and released recently was the last released film of the veteran actor. Thilakan played grandfather to actor Mammootty's son Dulquer Salman in the movie and his performance was appreciated by critics and audience.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2009 for his contributions towards the arts.
